This article is a compilation of lessons learnt and shared by successful entrepreneurs. Starting a business may be easy, but growing and maintaining one is definitely not a walk in the park.

Take a cue from those that have overcome what the average business owner would potentially go through, and learn from it.

  • There is a great commitment involved in starting a business. Entrepreneurs need to realise this early, and the time and resources required to grow and sustain a business. Hence, use your times and resources wisely.
  • Set a vision for yourself and your business. Remind yourself about it, and believe in it.
  • Keep expanding. Broaden your horizon. “By keeping your mind open to new ideas and embracing novelty, you’ll make new opportunities” -Michael Alden (Entrepreneur, CEO Blue Vase Marketing).
  • Be a strong salesperson. Promote and market your business zealously.
  • The name of your business is important. It is a reflection of you and the brand you project. Come up with a great name for your business.
  • Have a good business structure and maintain a good culture. Have every detail about your business - goals, vision, objectives, plan, number of employees and their job description, investors, products.
  • Let your target market and investors be regularly informed with updates about your business. Update your website or social media page always.
  • Have excellent customer service and support. Your customers become your promoters. Leverage on existing customers. There is no easier way to grow your customer base than providing value and having customers promote your brand for you.
  • Have a business mentor.
  • Have legal advisory at hand. Use it at all times, especially when you have to make critical decision.
  • Protect your assets.
  • Acquire legal documents.
  • Networking is great, but it all depends on you. Take advantage of it. Don’t lose your connections.
  • Understand financial statements and budgets.
  • Never evade taxes. Know the tax rates required of your business, and pay regularly. This should be included in your budgets.
